CRPD Article 19
You should live in the community, not an institution
You have the right to live with family or in the community with support, rather than being placed in an institution because support was not offered.
How you can use it
- 1Tell the caseworker you want family or community supports.
- 2Say: “Please provide the supports that let me live with others, not in an institution.”
- 3Ask for a written plan. Contact a disability advocate if you are being institutionalised.
What a violation looks like
A child is put in an institution because community supports were never tried.
Words you can use
“Please provide supports so I can live with family or in the community.”
If speaking is hard, write it, draw it, send a message, or ask a trusted adult to say it with you.
