Stereotypes are not an assessment

Staff should not rely on racial, disability or gender stereotypes. They should assess actual needs and shared parental responsibility.

How you can use it

  1. 1Challenge an assumption that is about your group, not about you.
  2. 2Say: “Please assess my actual needs, not a stereotype.”
  3. 3Ask a supervisor or advocate to correct the record.

What a violation looks like

A report treats a mother, a disabled parent or an Aboriginal family as incapable because of a stereotype.

Words you can use

“Please assess my actual needs, not a stereotype.”

If speaking is hard, write it, draw it, send a message, or ask a trusted adult to say it with you.
