CRPD Articles 15 and 17 · ICCPR Article 7

Treatment needs your understanding

Nobody may torture you or treat you cruelly. Procedures that change your body should be explained. You can ask for a pause, an advocate or a second opinion.

How you can use it

  1. 1Ask a doctor or carer to explain any treatment or restraint.
  2. 2Say: “I do not understand or agree to this. I want an advocate or doctor I trust.”
  3. 3Report forced or cruel treatment to a doctor, lawyer or inspector.

What a violation looks like

You are restrained, treated or experimented on without a proper explanation.

Words you can use

“Please explain what you are doing and listen to my decision.”

If speaking is hard, write it, draw it, send a message, or ask a trusted adult to say it with you.
