CRC Article 37 · CAT Article 16

Cruel treatment in locked places is forbidden

You must not be tortured or treated cruelly. If detained, you can ask why, request a lawyer and family contact, and insist on humane treatment.

How you can use it

  1. 1Ask: “Why am I being held, and can I speak to a lawyer and my family?”
  2. 2Tell a lawyer, doctor, inspector or trusted adult about threats, pain and conditions.
  3. 3Request humane treatment, medical care and legal review.

What a violation looks like

A child is held in cruel conditions, denied a lawyer, or detained arbitrarily.

Words you can use

“I want a lawyer, family contact, and humane treatment.”

If speaking is hard, write it, draw it, send a message, or ask a trusted adult to say it with you.
