ICCPR Article 4
An emergency does not erase core rights
Some rights cannot be switched off in an emergency. You can ask that an emergency not be used to skip legal review.
How you can use it
- 1If someone says “emergency” to skip your safeguards, write it down.
- 2Say: “Please do not use an emergency to suspend this protection.”
- 3Ask a lawyer for review.
What a violation looks like
Authorities invoke an emergency to suspend legal review of child detention.
Words you can use
“An emergency is not a reason to skip my core rights. I want a review.”
If speaking is hard, write it, draw it, send a message, or ask a trusted adult to say it with you.
