Level 2: Family and home

CERD Application · ICCPR Article 1

Aboriginal families should help decide

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children can ask for kinship, family and community-controlled representatives to take part in placement and service decisions.

How you can use it

  1. 1Ask who from family, kinship or a community-controlled organisation will be at the meeting.
  2. 2Say: “I want my community to help decide, not be left out.”
  3. 3Ask for that participation to be written into the plan.

What a violation looks like

A placement decision excludes Aboriginal kinship and community-controlled voices.

Words you can use

“I want kinship and community-controlled representatives to take part.”

If speaking is hard, write it, draw it, send a message, or ask a trusted adult to say it with you.
