ICCPR Article 9 · CRPD Article 14
You must not be locked up without a real reason
You have the right to liberty and security. Detention needs reasons, a lawyer and prompt court review. Disability alone is not a reason to detain you.
How you can use it
- 1Ask: “Why am I being held, and can I speak to a lawyer?”
- 2Ask for prompt court review.
- 3If you are detained because of disability, ask for supports instead of detention.
What a violation looks like
A child is arrested or detained without reasons, or locked up because of disability.
Words you can use
“Why am I being held? I want a lawyer and a review.”
If speaking is hard, write it, draw it, send a message, or ask a trusted adult to say it with you.
